Why
TEDxSydney 2010 will provide a platform for Australia’s leading visionaries and storytellers to speak to an energised group of thinkers, as well as to the world at large. At this invitation-only event, a curated group of changemakers, innovators, thinkers, creatives, cultural leaders & social pioneers will witness a back-to-back schedule of talks, performances and other multimedia surprises showcasing “Ideas Worth Spreading” from a carefully selected coterie of presenters whom the event organisers (and their networks) feel have something valuable to contribute.
When
Saturday 22 May 2010
Where
TEDxSydney will take place inside and around the Bay 17 theatre space at CarriageWorks. CarriageWorks is housed in the old Eveleigh Rail Yards at Wilson Street, located within the emerging Redfern Waterloo precinct. Starting with the cathedral-scale foyer, the physical beauty and scale of CarriageWorks is inspiring with a scope that is particularly suited to TEDxSydney. The distinctive nineteenth-century industrial atmosphere of the former railway carriage and blacksmith workshops have been retained, with many heritage iron and brick details featured in the regeneration of the building. There’s no other place like it.

What
A full day’s worth of speaker presentations and live performances will be simulcast to a larger audience within the CarriageWorks foyer where the TED theme of Ideas Worth Spreading will also be manifest by various displays and selected entertainment options. A live webstream will be available to online individuals and self-organised groups located throughout Australia, and indeed the rest of the world. Everyone involved (live participants, simulcast watchers in the CarriageWorks foyer, and remotely-located webstream viewers) will be encouraged to discuss the ideas and themes that develop throughout the day. These will be documented in real time and online via aggregated social media commentary.
Each presentation will be filmed using multiple cameras for editing and uploading to various video content websites after the event. The best of the presentations will be submitted to our partners at TED in New York for consideration as TED Talks and potential posting to TED.com, translation into multiple languages for the fast-expanding and global TED.com community.
TEDxSydney will establish an ongoing pipeline for the propagation of Australian “Ideas Worth Spreading” to the widest possible global audience.
For Whom
Attendance at TEDxSydney will be free but by invitation only. Only a relatively small number of people can participate as members of the Bay 17 audience. To be included within this select group of 500 you will need to be nominated for inclusion by a member of the TEDxSydney Think Tank. Alternatively, you will be able to apply online via this website. That application process will commence in January 2010. Be sure to subscribe to our mailing list and we’ll let you know when applications open.
