TEDxSydneySalons are intimate, evening events combining talks, films and music, presented by Toyota Prius. Designed to spark discussion and debate, TEDxSydneySalons are a great way to get to know other members of the TEDxSydney community, to exchange ideas, foster friendships and kickstart collaborations.
The February 2017 Salon investigated the theme of technology and took place in Tower Two, International Towers, in Sydney’s newest suburb, Barangaroo – a nexus of innovation in design, engineering, and sustainability.
The lineup included 2016 TEDxSydney speaker Jordan Nguyen, a visionary writer, and engineer whose life-changing work focuses on intelligent, futuristic and inclusive technology for the disability sector. Jordan returned to share his latest research, and to showcase more of his work in the latest film in our TEDxSydneyAdventures series. We were also joined by Jessica Irwin, a young woman with a unique perspective on life. Born with a high level of cerebral palsy and with an equally high level of self-determination and raw talent, she joined us on stage to speak about the role of technology in her creative life. Also joining Jess Irwin on stage were Thomas Rann and James Wannan from the Australia Piano Quartet as well as Jack Symonds (Sydney Chamber Opera Director).
In addition, we heard from John Goh, a school principal from Merrylands in South Western Sydney whose innovative practices using disruptive technologies are transcending traditional school learning, and Alice Gorman, an internationally recognised leader in the emerging field of space archaeology, who introduced us to the concept of ‘lunar mining’ and asked us to consider how it will affect the way we feel about the Moon. Plus singer, multi-instrumentalist and harpist, Jake Meadows joined us on stage with his contemporary approach to the harp and electronics, and we rounded the evening out with post-event sunset drinks and discussions with fellow TEDx community members.
